It’s helpful to understand how leather thickness is measured, as it’s not always uniform. While one ounce of leather is nominally 1/64″ (or approximately 0.4 mm) thick, you’ll find slight variations across a hide. Even leather that has been run through a splitting machine for consistency won’t be perfectly even. The key takeaway is simple: the more ounces a piece of leather has, the heavier it will be.
