Packaging for leather goods does two jobs at once: it protects a product through months of storage and transit, and it stages the moment a customer opens it. Specify only for the second and products arrive creased. Specify only for the first and an expensive item feels cheap on arrival.

Why leather needs protective packaging
Leather is not inert. Left unprotected it creases permanently where it folds, absorbs odours, marks where hardware presses against it, and can develop surface bloom or mould in humid conditions. Light-coloured and untreated leathers can also pick up dye transfer from whatever they touch.
Packaging is what stands between a finished product and several months of these risks.
Dust bags
The primary protective layer, and usually the only packaging that stays with the product long term.
Cotton flannel is soft, breathable and non-abrasive. The safest default for most leathers.
Cotton twill and canvas are more structured and durable, suited to heavier goods.
Non-woven synthetics are the cheapest option. They protect from dust but breathe poorly, which makes them a poor choice for long storage in humid conditions.
Silk and satin look luxurious but offer little structural protection and can be slippery in handling.
Breathability matters more than most brands expect. A leather item sealed in non-breathable material for months in a humid warehouse is at genuine risk of mould. If the supply chain involves long storage or shipping through humid regions, choose a breathable fabric.
Specify the fabric weight, the closure — drawcord, ribbon, flap — the branding method, and dimensions with enough ease that the product goes in without forcing.
Boxes
Rigid boxes are the premium option: a solid board wrapped in printed or textured paper. They protect well, stack reliably, and carry a strong quality signal. They are also the most expensive and the bulkiest to ship and store, since they cannot be flat-packed unless designed to fold.
Folding cartons are lighter, cheaper and ship flat. Structurally weaker, but adequate for smaller goods.
Corrugated mailers suit direct-to-consumer shipping, where the box must survive a courier network rather than a shelf.
The main decision is retail versus e-commerce. A box designed to look good on a shelf is not necessarily a box that survives being thrown into a van, and a growing number of brands need both — usually solved with a presentation box inside a shipping carton.
Inserts and internal protection
This is where damage is actually prevented, and where brands under-specify most often.
Stuffing maintains the shape of structured bags. Without it, a bag flattens in storage and the crease can become permanent. Acid-free tissue or shaped inserts both work; the choice depends on how much structure the product needs.
Hardware protection. Zip pullers, buckles and feet press into leather under stack pressure. Small foam or tissue barriers between hardware and leather prevent marks that are otherwise permanent.
Strap management. Long straps left loose fold against the body of the bag and crease it. Tissue between strap and body, or a defined folding instruction, prevents this.
Acid-free tissue matters for pale and vegetable-tanned leathers, where ordinary tissue can cause discolouration over time.
Silica gel controls humidity where products ship or store in humid conditions.
Insert design is worth testing rather than assuming. Pack a sample, leave it for several weeks, and open it — this reveals creasing and pressure marks that no specification review will.
Shipping cartons
The outer layer, invisible to the customer and essential.
Specify board strength appropriate to stack height and weight, moisture resistance where humidity is a factor, and a unit count per carton that balances handling weight against efficiency. Cartons need clear identification — style, colour, quantity, order reference — because a warehouse that cannot identify a carton without opening it costs time on every receipt.
Compliance and labelling
Requirements vary by market, but commonly include material composition, country of origin, care instructions and, in an increasing number of jurisdictions, packaging recyclability marking.
Two points that catch brands out: some markets require care and composition information in the local language, and packaging waste regulations increasingly impose obligations and reporting on the party placing goods on the market. Check the requirements for each destination before committing to printed materials, since reprinting is expensive and slow.
Cost and where to economise
Packaging cost scales differently from product cost. Print setup, die-cutting and custom sizing are largely fixed, so small runs carry a high per-unit cost while large runs amortise it away.
If budget is constrained, protect first and present second. Spend on a breathable dust bag and proper internal protection — those prevent damage. Economise on external print finishes such as foiling and embossing on the box, which affect perception but not product condition.
Standard box sizes are dramatically cheaper than custom ones. Designing the product family around two or three standard footprints saves more than most negotiation.

- Acid-free tissue where leather is pale or vegetable-tanned
- Humidity control where relevant

- Packed-sample test before committing to a production run
Where to go from here
Decide packaging during development, not after the product is approved. Insert design in particular depends on the product's final dimensions and structure, and cannot be finalised earlier — but it needs to be finalised before the first shipment rather than during it.
