Lining is the part of a bag customers touch constantly and specify last. It affects perceived quality, weight, cost and assembly time, and a poor choice generates a category of failure — dye transfer onto a customer's belongings — that is difficult to remedy after the fact.

What a lining actually does
A lining conceals internal construction, seam allowances and reinforcements. It protects the reverse of the leather from abrasion and from contact with contents. It provides a surface for pockets and compartments. And it contributes to structure, since a lining bonded to the shell adds stiffness.
Any lining decision trades off these functions against weight and cost.
Leather lining
Pigskin is the traditional choice — thin, strong, breathable and available in a wide colour range. It remains the standard for high-end small leather goods.
Lambskin and goatskin are softer and more luxurious in hand, and more expensive.
Split suede gives a soft, matte interior with a distinctive tactile quality.
Advantages: the strongest quality signal, excellent durability, and it ages consistently with the shell.
Disadvantages: the most expensive option by a wide margin, and the heaviest. It also requires skiving at the edges to control bulk, which adds labour.
Watch for: dye transfer. Some leather linings, particularly deeply dyed suedes in strong colours, can transfer colour onto contents. Specify colour fastness testing to rubbing, both dry and wet, and test with the actual production dye lot.
Suede and microsuede
Genuine suede gives a soft, premium interior with good abrasion resistance in the right weight.
Microfibre suede — synthetic non-woven materials engineered to mimic suede — has become common in luxury goods for good reasons: excellent abrasion resistance, dimensional stability, consistent colour with no dye lot variation, lighter than leather, and generally better colour fastness than natural suede.
The main objection is that it is synthetic, which matters to some brands and customers and not to others. Technically it often outperforms the natural material it imitates.
Cotton and cotton blends
Cotton twill is durable, breathable and inexpensive, and takes printing well for branded interiors.
Cotton canvas is heavier and more structured, suited to larger bags.
Cotton drill and sateen offer a smoother finish.
Advantages: low cost, easy to work, printable, and natural.
Disadvantages: less abrasion resistant than microfibre or leather, can absorb moisture and stains, and can wrinkle. Cotton also shrinks unless pre-shrunk — specify that it is.
Printed cotton linings are one of the more cost-effective ways to add brand identity to an interior, since printing setup is inexpensive relative to leather.
Synthetic woven linings
Polyester is inexpensive, durable, dimensionally stable, quick-drying and colourfast.
Nylon is stronger with excellent abrasion resistance, common in technical and travel products.
Jacquard-woven synthetics allow branding woven into the material itself rather than printed, which reads as more considered and does not wear off.
Advantages: low cost, consistent, colourfast, light.
Disadvantages: can feel cheap in a premium product, particularly in thin, shiny weights. Weight and weave quality make an enormous difference here — a heavy woven polyester jacquard and a thin shiny polyester taffeta are both polyester and read completely differently.

Construction considerations
Attachment method. A lining can be bonded to the shell across its whole surface, which adds structure and prevents sagging, or hung loose and attached only at the top edge, which is faster and allows the shell to move independently. Bonded linings feel more substantial; loose linings are cheaper and better suited to soft, unstructured bags.
Interlining. A layer between shell and lining adds body. Common where the leather alone will not hold the intended shape.
Bulk at seams. Every layer adds thickness. A leather lining plus interlining plus shell produces significant bulk at corners and seams, which affects both appearance and the machinery needed to stitch it.
Pockets. Interior pockets are constructed in the lining and are a major driver of assembly time. Each pocket is a set of separate operations. Reducing pocket count is one of the more effective ways to reduce labour cost without visibly cheapening a product.
Colour matching. A lining specified to match the shell exactly is difficult across different materials, since leather and textile take colour differently. Deliberate contrast is often the better decision, and is easier to hold consistent across production.
Colour transfer: the failure to design out
The most common lining complaint is dye transferring onto contents — notebooks, phone cases, clothing.
Prevent it by specifying colour fastness to rubbing, dry and wet, on the actual production material. Test with the real dye lot, not a reference swatch. Treat strong colours — deep reds, navies, blacks — as higher risk. And be particularly careful with suede and unfinished materials, which have the loosest surface fibres.
This is an inexpensive test that prevents an expensive category of customer complaint.
Compliance

Matching lining to product
Structured luxury handbags typically take leather or microfibre suede, bonded, with an interlining.
Soft unstructured totes suit loose cotton or woven synthetic, which keeps weight down.
Small leather goods usually use leather lining, since bulk must be minimal and the interior is seen constantly.
Travel and technical products favour nylon for abrasion resistance and low weight.
